We get asked this a lot. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to just what a lanai is and how it is distinguished from a patio. If you asked 100 people you probably would get everything from “I have no idea” all the way to “they are the same thing”.
However, If you ask a Hawaiian where the word originated or somebody from a warm hospitable climate they would probably define it simply as an outside room, typically covered with furniture.
